A photographer’s dream: children jumping for joy.  Of course, these are my adorable grandchildren.  The idea for this collage started when  Katherine just plain wanted to jump during her 11 year old portrait sitting.  Then Nana was thinking that her brother and sister had the same impulse.  It was easy to get these children to do what was already in their hearts.  And putting the whole thing together was a fun artistic challenge!  Hooray for children, photography, and joy!Dunnfacebookjump challenge for their photographer grandmother.  Now I have one on my work table and Mom and Dad have one in their office.  Who could resist?

For  years I struggled with finding a personal style in photographing maternities.  I felt I knew what the current style says-  waiting Moms want to be photographed with style and pride.  The only problem was that I had a problem with the bare belly-  not that I didn’t enjoy that kind of work.  It’s just that it didn’t seem right for me.  I never felt I could reach to that special place in Mom’s heart using that style.  My marketing “person” was after me about this.  OK.  If you know her, Lisa Kingree was very much after me about this.  I finally agreed to do a maternity sitting in my own style when she produced a model.  And she did– a beautiful one at that.  Here is how I found my path-   just working with my model to create what I thought was beautiful.  Now that style is developing.  My latest mom is really sparkling in my “Modest Maternity” style.  Here is my first “Modest Maternity” subject and my most recent, each so lovely in her own way!blogMaternity

This lovely young lady is a photographer’s dream-  beautiful, yet innocent.  Full of childhood joy and leaning into sophistication.  Portraiture tries to meet so many goals, capturing different aspects of a child’s personality.  Families, of course, love the innocence and the joy.  Growing  up children love the newfound parts  of themselves and the grown-ups they are becoming.  As it happens, the youngster shown here is my lovely granddaughter.  Her parents loved the first portrait and the collage she created with just a little help from me of her jumping for joy.  They smiled weakly at the other images.  You can see why.  Hope you enjoy sharing with me the challenges and rewards of photographing an eleven  year old!FBkat1

Welcome to the newest feature from Patricia Gagne Photographic Art.  This idea came to me as I reviewed in my mind all the beautiful art my clients and I have created together, elegantly displayed in their homes.  I thought that everyone would like to see how the art of portraiture can enhance any room in the house.  We all love our children and like to see the very best part of them on display every day.  I  have been known to suggest to clients that they peruse their portraiture when times get tough in child rearing!.  So here it is:  the Patzer home.  Lisa is a favorite long-time client with a gorgeous home.  Perfect to start off the series.  The wide-angle image of the room is shown first and then close-ups of the portraits found in that room, with an explanation of size so  you can see what works in a specific spot.  Let me know if you have any questions and/or if you would like your home to be featured.  Your family photographer will be happy to oblige!

I’ve just completed two family painted portraits, each quite different in look and feel.  I plan to choose one for a large display in my studio reception area, but am having trouble selecting the right one.  So please give me your opinion/advice in the comment section.  The portrait below is of a family with Mom, Dad, and two teenage children. The expressions on  all four are great and their placement is graceful.  Needless to say, they are a super-handsome family, which is very important in making this choice.  After all my clients all plan to look just as great in their own portrait.  The selection of clothing here is very suitable to a large painting.  It is simple, but not boring. But the most artful aspect of the painted portrait is the setting.  Incomparable Fall beauty.  Since this family has only tall, handsome people in it, they are strong enough in the image not to be outshone by the extraordinary background. The  image above has quite a different look.  The background here is softer which works very well with so many subjects in the portrait.  This family has Mom and Dad, his three children and her three children.  They blend in the image as in real life.  It was a pleasure to photograph a truly functional joined family!  The clothing in this portrait is terrific.  I love the way the colors and styles blend – nothing is more boring than to have everyone dressed the same.  The clothing also captures the spirit of each subject and that is my foremost goal in creating a family portrait. This photographer will be looking at the display every day for some time, so do give me  your considered opinion!

Dylan, my son’s child, is here for a week.  His love and joy have filled our lives.  Being a Nana/photographer has been fun too.  Dylan loves studio photography- for about ten minutes.  So here are the results. CazalascolF

The story I am about to tell is real, yet also merely in my mind.  It is a photographer’s story. Weeks ago I offered in my newsletter to make a painted portrait of a special needs child as a holiday gift.  And so Jasmine came to me. The details of  her condition I didn’t ask.  She came in the arms of her step-father to be. Jasmine was silent all through the two hours I knew her, lying quietly in her beautiful blue velvet dress, her lovely chestnut curls around her face.  Jasmine can’t sit up or even hold her head up for long, but she was comfortable leaning her head against the arm of a man who clearly took joy in supporting her.  Mom is beautiful, slim and elegant.  She wanted me to see and capture the beauty of her only child, and her sweetness.  Along with the family came Jasmine’s pet parrot who posed and preened wherever I placed him.  Every once in a while he would emit a sharp sound which I would think was an expensive piece of lighting equipment crashing to the ground.  But then silence and a very innocent look from this gorgeous bird.  Dad asked for a shot of him and the bird for the photo wall at a restaurant he frequents- a splash of fun within this effort to capture the beauty of this family.  They will have the hree wall portraits seen here to grace their home and say they will remember me and keep me in their prayers.  Me too.Maniegofb1Maniegofb2Maniegofb3Maniegofb4

Photographers everywhere dream of that perfect, wonderfully creative holiday card.  To this photographer, holiday cards are great when they serve the purpose of the client.  For example, this year my daughter wanted to send a card which showed her three children doing what they love best.  Amateur photographers everywhere give this a try, probably including most of  you.  Here is the result of a professional photographer taking the vision of the client and creative a card that  has a finished quality –  simple idea well executed.Untitled-1

Can you tell who are Dawn’s and who are Marty’s children?  What a pleasure to have them all come together for a family portrait.
